Performance of ducted propulsors
in open water assessed
In the meantime a corrected, improved and enlarged version
of the paper, originally prepared for SMP '11 at Hamburg,
has been submitted under the title
- On the merits of ducted propulsors
for eventual publication in the special issue
on 'Marine Propulsors and Current Turbines:
State of the Art and Current Challenges'
of the 'International Journal of Rotating Machinery'.
Subsequently the author has been informed that the paper
has been rejected based on the following

Following a personal discussion with Dr.Steden
various explanatory remarks,
- diverse Erläuterungen,
have been added to explain the post scriptum to the paper
submitted to SMP '11, in particular the Bernoulli equation
and the theory of ideal propulsors.
Further correspondence resulted in additional explanations, in

and in further remarks, in
- noch weiteren Erläuterungen,
hopefully putting an end to the dispute.

A Paper on 'Ducted Propulsors in Open Water',
- Performance assessed by basic principles,
to be presented at the Second International Symposium on Marine Propulsors,
smp '11, to be held at Hamburg, Germany, June 15-17, 2011,
has been reviewed, revised accordingly and upgraded, where necessary.

The paper is published here together with

for discussion before and after the Symposium, while a Presentation will not
(yet) be available due to the rejection of the paper and its presentation.

A ducted propulsor discussed
On occasion of the 101st Annual Meeting of STG at Hamburg, November 22-24,
2006, a written contribution on
- A deeply submerged waterjet: discussed
has been submitted, based on an earlier, eight years old (!) publication
by Dr. Dirk Jürgens of Voith Turbo at Heidenheim and Michael Bohm of SVA
at Potsdam, provided in the absence of preprints.
The goal of the contribution was to bridge the gap between the conceptions
of propeller and pump designers on ducted propulsion systems.
Following the contributor's continued analysis of the 'preliminary' data
at hand Dr. Jürgens invited for an oral discussion, which took place
at Heidenheim on February 13, 2007. Subsequently the contributor has undertaken
a detailed analysis of the data published in the paper by Jürgens and Heinke
- A deeply submerged waterjet: numerically analysed
and prepared a corresponding theoretical paper
- A deeply submerged waterjet: theoretically analysed,
both together providing references for the update of his contribution
- A deeply submerged waterjet: finally discussed,
suggested by STG to be published together with the response of the authors
in HANSA.
The continued discussion and the theoretical paper, finished March 16, 2007,
together with the basic numerical analysis, and since available on this website,
as noted in the STG Proceedings, had been due to be published in a February
edition of HANSA 146 (2009), though without final comments of the authors,
both being tied up in urgent project work.
For reasons not disclosed the publication has been delayed until the discussion
is no longer of current interest, at least not for readers of HANSA.
The theoretical paper on the evaluation of the open-water performance of
ducted propellers will be published elsewhere.
